Gold Coast hobby trainer, Kevin Joiner, maintained his 50 per cent winning record for the season when Robinmegood won race six at Redcliffe Paceway last Wednesday night.
The 67-year-old Coomera resident (close to ‘Movie World’) paid $5,000 for the 5-year-old Mr Feelgood – Red Red Robin (P B Bullville) gelding at the 2017 APG Yearling Sale at Albion Park. He was bred by Solid Earth Pty Ltd.
Robinmegood is Joiner’s only horse in work. The bay has now won two of his four starts and ran second in the other. All four of his runs this season have been at ‘The Triangle’. He also won there on January 28.
“I really enjoy racing at Redcliffe because it suits the calibre of horse that I train. I only ever have a couple going at a time. It’s what I do in my retirement, and I really like it,” the former construction worker said.
Joiner has had his licence since December 2009. He has trained 31 winners since then with just four horses.
Win 32 could come this Wednesday night (Feb. 17) at ’The Paceway’ when Robinmegood takes on his full brother in the first event.
The Grant Dixon trained and Chris Petroff driven Signor Jujon has drawn four after winning well on the track, also last Wednesday night. Younger brother, Robinmegood, who will again be driven by Nathan Dawson, has drawn eight (two in the second line).
“I like Nathan. He’s a terrific driver. He drove my horse very well from gate three last week. He is a very good judge of pace and really knows how to drive this fella,” Joiner said.
Dawson hunted the lead early with Robinmegood and then dictated all the pace to win the 1,780m mobile in 2:12.5 (mile rate 1:59.8). They won by 1.6m. Robinmegood has now won seven of his 48 starts and placed 10 times for $30,427. He made his winning debut at Albion Park on September 25.
“He actually won his first two races, and to be honest I always thought the other one I bought at the same Sale was better than him, but he’s slowly proving me wrong. He’s so genuine and always tries his heart out. You can’t ask for much more in a horse really – so long as they try,” Joiner said.
Joiner paid $10,000 for Makinmefeelgood – a Mr Feelgood – Making Gold (by Bookmaker) gelding at the 2017 Sale.
“I actually I sold him to Brittany Graham in August last year. There was nothing wrong with him. In fact, I always thought he was a bit quicker than Robinmegood, but I was sick of trying to get that second win out of him.
“He must have had up to 50 starts for me. He went close and placed a lot, but his only win came at Redcliffe in late (November) 2019. It was good to see Ryan Veivers win with him last start.
“I do all my fast-work on his track at Alberton. Ryan has been a big help, and I’m so grateful for that,” Joiner said.
Joiner will also be bringing back his other stable rep, Jay Dee Been Rolling (Artistic Fella – Bye Rate – Ok Bye), who has been spelling after an injury. He last raced in December and has won four races and about $30,000.
“I paid $10,000 for him privately. He’s a very talented horse, and I’m hoping he might be my best yet.”
But that title currently rests with the 2011 son of Grinfromeartoear, Phantom Rockstar, who won 15 races and $90,567.
“He was my best, and I’ll never forget him. He made it all fun. I guess I owe it all to Mal Charlton really.
“He was my neighbour who got me into the sport in my early 50s, and the rest is history,” Melbourne-born Joiner said.
He said he came to Queensland (Townsville) with the Army in the early 1970s and then moved to the Gold Coast where he got into the construction and building industry in 1978.
Joiner has been married to Denise for 46 years.
