Dzu Pham believed in raw black ginger so much he recently travelled the 13,144 km round trip from Brisbane to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), to seek the traditional remedies to cure his ill mother, Phong.
The 48-year-old, who cares for his Mum full-time, set off on his three-week journey in February determined to prolong, or save his mother’s life.
“My mother used to be very pale and white, and suffered from heart problems, high cholesterol, gallstones, and asthma, among other allergies.
“After switching to black ginger, raw Forest Honey and Wild Forest Mushroom, Mum’s blood flow and energy levels were starting to change. It’s only been two or so months since I returned, but my mother has shown good progress and I have witnessed many changes in her health,” Vietnam-born Dzu said.
He said he saw his mother taking so much Western medicine and because it was not improving her health he was forced to do something to eliminate a premature death.
“I took the bull by the horns and decided to do something about it. I had heard about black ginger from my parents and grandparents because Mum became very ill and was not getting any better with Western medicines. That’s when I started to investigate natural remedies. She is feeling so much better now,” Dzu said.
“Natural remedies have been in our lives for centuries and passed down by many generations. I believe in them with all my heart. I’m seeing the proof now with my mother,” he added.
He said it was disheartening watching his mother drink a handful of Western medicine three times every day for weeks and years on end.
“It’s even worse when you see there are no positive results and Mum’s health was never getting any better,” Sunnybank (Brisbane)-based Dzu said.
He said black ginger grew in certain areas and his supply hailed from Tay Bac in the northern regional forest of Vietnam.
“Black ginger is rare and only grows in certain areas. After much research and communication with my people, I noticed that many locals used natural remedies for many symptoms and sickness. Different variations can be produced due to the soil content. If anyone googles ‘raw black ginger’ I can guarantee it will be hard to obtain because it only grows in certain climates and temperatures,” Dzu said.
“I brought a lot back, but now I have organised shipping for anyone who wants it,” he added.
So, what is Raw Black Ginger (Fresh Black Ginger Dried Black Ginger)?

Kaempferia parviflora, also known as black ginger or black turmeric, is an adaptogenic herb with a long history of use as a traditional medicine. This herb is often used as a supplement for its antioxidant effects.
Benefits:
– Improved strength in older people – The supplement was shown to improve grip strength in older individuals and likely improves other aspects of strength as well.
– Improved exercise performance – Animal studies show improvements in endurance performance, post-exercise recovery, and muscle strength. Some of these benefits likely apply to humans to at least some degree but human studies are necessary to confirm this.
– Improved mitochondrial function – Kaempferia promotes ATP production, mitochondrial β-oxidation, and AMP-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK). All of these are associated with good mitochondrial health.
– Antioxidant effects – Black ginger can greatly improve the antioxidant enzyme profile and help protect the body from oxidative stress. This benefit was mainly found in older people and needs to be replicated in younger individuals as well.
– Improved cardiovascular health – The herb promotes lean body mass, healthy nitric oxide signalling pathway function, endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), and other things related to good cardiovascular health, at least in animals.
How much black ginger should you take?
Because black ginger is an adaptogenic herb, it acts as a mild hormetic stressor on the body, which allows your body to adapt and become more resilient to certain kinds of stressors in the long term.
A higher dose does not necessarily lead to more pronounced benefits. Instead, there appears to be an inverted U-shaped dose-response pattern. In other words, you want to find a sweet-spot dose that allows you to get the benefits of black ginger without putting too much pressure on the body or quickly causing the body to develop tolerance to the herb.
The sweet-spot dose typically ranges anywhere between 1000-1500 mg of dry herb powder daily. If you buy an x:1 extract, divide the dry herb powder dosage by x. If you purchase an extract standardized for polymethoxyflavonoids, the sweet spot dose of polymethoxy flavonoids. Polymethoxyare about 15-25 mg. a type of uncommon dietary flavonoids characterized by more than one methoxy group, which exist in limited plant species.
The higher end of this range usually provides slightly more benefits in the short term. If you plan to take this herb for a longer time (multiple months or years), the lower end is probably a better way to go since you would develop tolerance faster if you were to take higher doses.
Additionally, very high doses can put too much pressure on your system and cause health problems if you take the supplement for a prolonged period.
While this herb could theoretically cause acute toxicity, you’d need to take an extremely high dose that would be way beyond what even the most potent supplements contain.
Like most other adaptogens, it is best to cycle black ginger and take about two days off weekly to reset your tolerance. That will allow you to keep getting the benefits in the long term.
Keep in mind that the effects of this herb are cumulative. Therefore, you must take it for at least 2-4 weeks to notice most of the benefits. But again, cycling the herb and not taking it at least twice a week is necessary to prevent tolerance in the long term.
When is the best time to take black ginger?
You can take this herb with or without food. Each of these options has its benefits. The main bioactive compounds in the herb should absorb well either way.
If you experience nausea or stomach discomfort when you take this herb, taking it with food should prevent these unpleasant effects or at least make them less intense.
If you take this herb on an empty stomach, the short-term effects will kick in faster, and they will be more pronounced but will not last as long.
Whether you take this herb in the morning or the evening typically does not make much difference. Both options are fine so feel free to experiment.

Green Lim Mushroom from Quang Nam Vietnam
What is the Green Lim Mushroom?
The Green Lim Mushroom, scientifically known as Ganoderma lucidum (Leyss. Ex Fr.) Karst., belongs to the Ganodermataceae family, which includes various species of Reishi mushrooms.
As mentioned above, the Green Lim Mushroom is a member of the Reishi mushroom family. However, what makes it unique is that it only grows on decayed Green Lim trees in primary forests. The Green Lim tree itself is a long-lived tree species found in forests.
A fully grown Green Lim tree can reach several dozen meters in height, with a trunk so thick that two adults cannot encircle it with their arms. Due to deforestation, the number of these trees is decreasing, making the Green Lim Mushroom increasingly rare.
Characteristics of the Green Lim Mushroom
The Green Lim Mushroom grows from the trunk or roots of Green Lim trees. Compared to other Reishi mushrooms, it is smaller in size. Its cap spreads out like a fan and reaches a maximum width of around 20 cm, with a thickness of about 2–5 cm. The stem, where it attaches to the tree, may have an indentation or not. The stem is generally short and uneven. Overall, the mushroom has a rough, irregular shape. The cap has a slightly glossy appearance with a light-yellow hue, while the underside is smooth. Some mushrooms have a white rim on the upper part of the cap.
Distribution
Since the mushroom grows exclusively on Green Lim trees, it is found wherever these trees exist. In the past, Vietnam had vast primary forests stretching from the North to the South. However, as natural Green Lim forests have become scarcer, these mushrooms are now mainly found in remote areas along the Vietnam-Laos border and in the mountainous regions of southern Laos, such as Salavan, Attapu, and Mekong. They are also found in dense forests in Quang Nam (Truong Son) and the Central Highlands of Vietnam: Nam Trà My, Tiên Phước, Đông Giang of Quang Nam Province.
Nowadays, the Green Lim Mushroom is also cultivated, but its medicinal properties are significantly lower than those of wild-grown mushrooms. There is also a semi- wild variety, grown in the forest or at its edge, which has better medicinal value than home-grown mushrooms but still does not match the potency of wild ones.

Harvesting and Usage
Usable Parts
The entire mushroom, except for the root, is used.
Harvesting Process
Harvesting the Green Lim Mushroom is a challenging and dangerous task, often requiring long treks through the forest. The peak growing season is from March to July. Only mature mushrooms are collected, while smaller ones are left to grow for future harvests.
Chemical Composition of the Green Lim Mushroom
The Green Lim Mushroom is highly sought after due to its remarkable health benefits, primarily attributed to its bioactive compounds:
1. Triterpenes
• Enhances hormonal activity in the body and maintains digestive system stability.
• Supports central nervous system function.
• Inhibits cancer cell growth and aids in cancer treatment.
2. Germanium
• Strengthens the immune system.
• Supplies oxygen to the body and removes toxins.
• Increases oxygen levels in cells, preventing cancer cells from thriving.
3. Ling Zhi-8 Protein
• Regulates immune function.
• Activates the development of dendritic cells, which are a type of white blood cell.
4. Adenosine
• Helps regulate physiological processes.
• Stabilizes blood pressure and prevents cardiovascular diseases.
• Enhances circulation and regulates cholesterol levels.
• Improves physical health and nervous system stability.
5. Vitamin B Complex
• Plays a crucial role in metabolism, particularly in converting carbohydrates into
sugars and metabolizing fats.
6. Vitamin C
• Acts as a cofactor in biochemical reactions.
• Supports collagen production.
• Helps the body absorb iron and eliminate harmful free radicals.
Health Benefits of the Green Lim Mushroom
Immune System Support
Studies on mice have demonstrated that the Green Lim Mushroom can activate immune-regulating effects. However, further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness in humans. Some studies also suggest its role in antioxidant activity, immune system regulation, and potential benefits in preventing neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes.
Nervous System
• Enhances central nervous system function.
• Reduces stress and improves sleep quality.
Cancer Treatment
Research has shown that triterpenes in the Green Lim Mushroom have anti-cancer properties. These compounds inhibit tumour growth and metastasis through various mechanisms.
Digestive and Liver Health
• Supports treatment and prevention of hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease.
• Improves appetite and stabilizes blood sugar levels, benefiting diabetes patients.
Circulatory System
• Regulates blood pressure and prevents hypertension.
• Reduces cholesterol levels, minimizing artery hardening.
• Aids in post-stroke recovery.

• Fake or cultivated mushrooms have caps perpendicular to the stems, as they grow from soil instead of tree trunks.
• Taste: Wild mushrooms have a very bitter taste that lingers in the throat.
